During the following days I had several more
talks with Schellenberg, who had had further
conferences with Himmler. He thought that the
latter, together with other leading figures in the
Nazi hierarchy, would soon decamp to the south
of Germany. I advised Schellenberg in that event
to remain in northern Germany and to obtain
from Himmler broad discretionary powers,
especially in connection with the Scandinavian
prisoners of war, in order that if such a situation arose
they might be removed to Sweden. He promised
to do his best to make such arrangements. Then
he informed me that Himmler had once more
recurred to the question of my going to
Eisenhower. At this point I told Schellenberg in plain
words what my attitude in the matter was, and
that he must rid his mind of any illusions that the
Allies would ever enter into negotiations with
Himmler. Himmler could not conceivably head
the government for more than a short period of
transition, after which it would be taken over by
the Allied occupation authorities. It was possible,
however, I added, that in this way Himmler might
prevent Germany being plunged into utter chaos.
