There’s a dance of leaves in that aspen bower,

There’s a titter of winds in that beechen tree,
There’s a smile on the fruit and a smile on the flower,

And a laugh from the brook that runs to the sea.

And look at the broad-faced sun, how he smiles

On the dewy earth that smiles in his ray,
On the leaping waters and gay young isles, —

Ay, look, and he’ll smife all thy gloom away.

William C. Bryant.

53. A Storm (Dialogue the 13th.)

A. I think we shall have a storm before long; do you
see those heavy clouds coming up against the wind?

B. Yes, a sure sign of thunder; it will be very
refreshing to have a little rain after so much dry weather.

A. If it doesn’t hail; — a heavy hail-storm would do
an immense deal of damage, just now.

B. It would indeed, but I trust we shall have nothing
heavier than rain.

A. I felt a drop there; how still every thing is, not a
leaf moving on the trees — the wind seems to be collecting
all its energies.

B. And the cattle are all taking refuge under the trees;
poor things, it’s not much protection for them in a
thunderstorm — had we not better go in?

A. Yes, we can stand at the window; I like to watch
a storm, it is a splendid sight.

B. Are you not afraid of the lightning?

A. Afraid! I should think not, there is no more danger

in one part of the room, than the other.

B. But one seems so exposed at the window, you had
better close it; see how the rain is dashing in.

A. Never mind, it can’t hurt anything; I will place
these plants outside, that they may have some rain. What
a fearful clap!

B. Tremendous, and what heavy rain; we shall have a
flood, if this keeps on long.

A. It is too heavy to last, and, besides, the river is very
low, we have had no rain for some time; it will do a great
deal of good.

B. It seems to become darker every moment.

A. Yes, it will last longer than we thought at first;
the rain is becoming more steady, and the whole sky is
covered with dark grey clouds.
