MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

could not be surprised if you wearied, and resolved to remove to
England out of the way of those wicked Swedes. But my beloved
brother, be not weary, remain with us and work the work of God.
If we view the matter aright, you are really blessed, you have the
honour to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. It is an evidence that
you belong to the Master and the household when you are called
Beelzebub. But if they be many who revile you, they are also
many who love you and pray to God for you.» A fourth
clergyman (Sefström) writes: »Brother, you have not said too much, our
garments in Sweden are defiled by many a disgraceful blot. We
are deeply pained, by the circumstances in which you are placed.
Be assured beloved brother, that you with your open honourable
conduct, embracing a practical developement of true religion without
bigotted regard to circumstantials, possess in us true friends and
a ready embrace, the stream of events may lead where it will. You
may be near us, as we desire, or distant from us should God so
permit, but you are in either case our friend in Christ as a
member of his body. Our liberals perceive that they who love God
honour the King, this is the röck of offence.» A fifth (Kjerfstedt):
»My surprise as regards your statements in America is, that the
shouting can be so great about so little, and that you could say
so little about so much». A sixth (Norell): »That your pamphlet
occasioned noise, bitterness & gainsaying is only the clearest proof
that the statements were necessary». A seventh (Westdahl) to the
Missionary: »The first of those shameful attacks, by which the
Aftonblad has so evidently shewn itself the enemy and perverter of a
nation, whose defender it pretends to be, did only fill our minds
with joy & praise, as it informed us at once of your happy return
& that you were more than ever found worthy of the blessedness
of bearing his reproach». And to a mutual friend: »The
persecution against Scott and the friends of the word who have been
edified by him is a painful sign of the times, but by no means
unexpected in my eyes. I called Scott’s attention to this while the
Chapel was building and feared that his advertisements for aid
would then call it forth. The American-journey has only hastened
the outbreaking which sooner or later must have come.»

An eighth (C. Rahmn): Br. George! I am both ashamed &
grieved at the manner in which you are treated by my countrymen;
& altho’ I might have reason at times, to long for old England,
yet, I feel happy not to be there now, only to blush & to be
confounded in the presence of the people of God, in that happy country,
on account of what is now said & done against you & ag[ains]t the
Lord’s cause among us. I wait with great anxiety to see the end
of the present affliction. No doubt, but the Lord has great &
merciful ends in view, and that what now seemeth us grievous, will
be overruled for good, & turns out to His glory & our salvation.
