Yesterday I recd your favour of the 15th aprill 1771, the other you
mention never came to hand. I am sory the dissertations are not
prin-ted yet to send you a copy of them, you may be assured on one so
soon as they are. fn the interim 1 shall give you what satisfaction I
can in the treatment of the venereal disease. — When there is only
some remains of the virus after a salivation, or other ineffectual course
the following pills given twice a week is oftentimes suff6 viz. take of
best rubarb in powder ^i. of good & pure quicksilver 3S- Put them
into a marble or glass morter & ad as much water gradually as will
bring the rubarb to the consistinces of pills rubing then very well with
a pestil. the mercury will be soon incorporated & extinguished very
perfectly very soon & then it may be given in pills or a bolus. The
quantity of mercury here may be varied as well as the quantity of
Rubarb, & the dose made smaller or larger as you please. likeways, when
you chose to purge, some more actieve purgative may be interposed,
or joyned in the pills (after incorporating the mercury) this sir you see
is only an occasional Medecine & I do realy believe the real composition
of Bilosts pills, for it has much better effects thus than when mixt
with any other compositions, but for the cure of the rooted Disorder
my method was as follows. After useing a few warm baths for 3 or
4 days perhaps a week, I ordered the following pills, wh cure with out
