pro-oeed to Smith’s Sound, where Lieut.
Peary was to meet us.
MWe started for Smfth’s Sound, but
on reacbing Cape Sabine our progress
northward was impeded by ice, and we
ware forced to go into winter quarters
at Payer Harbor, which is directly
acroøs tbe sound from Cape Sablno.
Our only information concerning Mr.
Peary was tbat contained in the
instruc-tions found at Etah, and those were
dated April 19.
*As after events proved, Lieut. Peary
spent the winter at Fort Conger, which
was only 50 miles distant, but he was
not aware of our being in such close
proximity to him, nor did wo liave the
8lightest idea that only 50 miles
separated us from him.
“lt seemed hopeless to attempt to find
him during the winter but as soon as
spring opened I securod the servicés of
several Eskimos, who, accompanled by
two of the Windward’8 sailors, who
voluntered for tbe trip, set out to find
Mr. Peary. They had only Joumeyed
60 miles when they encounlered the
Lieutenant and two companlons
Corning south.
“Mr. Peary was greatly supprised to
leam that myself and dsughter Marie
were on the Windward, and you may
be sure he lost uo time in nastening
to us. 1 was in my bunk when he
reached the steamer, but I knew his
footsteps the moment he reached the
deck, and instructed the steward to
open the cabin door before he reached
us. It was a bappy meeting for all
of us, and what made it especially
pleasant was the faet that it was the
6th of May. Lieut Peary’s birthday.
In referring to what her husband
had acoomplished, Mrs. Peary said he
had ostablished the faot that the most
northerly point of Greenland is 85.39,
and that between it and the North Pole

He was ordained Deacon in Triuits
Churcb, #eneva, N. Y., in 1849, and in
the folowing year was ordained priest
the Christ Church, Sackett’s Harbor,
feoth by Bishop De Lancey. He received
the degree of D. D. from Hobart and
Racine Colleges. He was called to
Zion Church, Home, N. Y., in 1850, and
the psrish inereased so rapidly und®r
his rectorship that he soon built s
handsome stone church. Ho received
calls to a number of wealthy parishes,
but he did not feel that a “call from
God” hsd come to him until he received
an urgent summons to go to Chicago,
surrender his flourlshing parish and
pleasant home, and at a smaller sal ary
start a churcn for hundreds of younv
men engaged in business, and for au
sorts and conditiöns of humanit. Tho
succobs of his work in Chicago, and
particularly his influence over men,
was all but unbounded. His
wonder-ful power of reaching men. his rare
eloquence, his cou-tesy to all those of
other religious faiths, his pure,
broth-erhood of men, includlng even
con-victs, and his imtiring real won for him

His Work in Chioago.
It was Bishop Whipple who estab-
llshed the firee church system in
Chicago. While there he also devoted
mueh time to the Swedish work.
During his rectorship in Chicago, in 1850,
he was by umanimous vote elected to
the episcopate, and was consecrated
flr8t bishop of Minnesota in St James
Church, Richmond. Va., Bishop
Kom-per being one of the consec ators. The
diocese over which he had been chosen
to preside ertended over 81.269 square
miles.
One of the chief and probsbly the
most enduring of Bishop Whippie’s
works was the founding of schools at
Faribault. Minn., which have attalned
world wide repute.
