that had been alienated by former Governments or Monarchs of the country, the copper
works were transferred to the Crown. Avesta was then mortgaged for 20 years to
Isaac Cronström, one of Kock’s sons who had received a title. Through the mediation
of the Board of Mines the works were declared as early as 1668 to be the property of the
Bergslag and were to be returned to this Company after the termination of the twenty
years. This was not done, however, but, in 1686, Avesta was instead again transferred
to the State. The town rights were at the same time cancelled and all the inhabitants
driven out. In 1686 the works were let to Mrs. Elisabeth Funch. This lease was taken
over in 1694 by Carl Funch, Chamberlain, and Mr. Gustaf Funch, manager of the
works, for a sum of 23,000 silver Daler. In 1698 the Bergslag Company received
a lease of the works, lasting until 1777, when the same Company became the owners
by purchasing the Works.

The minting of copper at Avesta ceased in 1831 and was removed to the Royal Mint
at Stockholm.

The copper refined at Avesta from 1642 to 1829 may be estimated at 250,000 tons
at least. Nearly all the copper coinage of Sweden was minted at Avesta from 1644 to
1831, this including no less than 43,000 tons of the characteristic plate coins.
