farten paa længere Farvande, dels af mindre Fartøier,
som sendes paa Fiskeexpeditioner. Seilskibenes Antal
udgjør nu 271 paa tilsammen 58,451 Tons. — Bergen
staar i livlig direkte Dampskibsforbindelse med Byerne
langs Kysten, Kjøbenhavn og Østersøen, Hamburg,
Holland, England og Amerika. Byens egen
Dampskibsflåde er i de sidste Aar voxet med Kjæmpeskridt
og har større Læstedrægtighed end alle de øvrige
norske Byers tilsammen; Dampskibenes Antal er nu 68
paa tilsammen 22,621 Tons. — Skibsbyggeriet staar
paa et høit Trin; fire større Skibsværfter findes i eller
tæt udenfor Byen.

Indseilingen til Bergen er meget smuk. Naar man
med Dampskibet søndenfra har bøiet om Kvarvepynten,
kommer den lange Rad af hvidmalede Pakhuse i
Sandvigen først frem; først naar man er kommen forbi
Nordnæspynten, har man Byen foran sig med det
mægtige Ulrikken i Baggrunden. Kommer man nordenfra,
ser man først de tre Fjelde vest for Byen, blandt hvilke
Lyderhorn skiller sig ud ved sin Form af to krumme
Horn. Udenfor Byens Havn {Vaagen), mellem
Toldboden og Bergenhus Fæstning, ligger Moloen til Værn
mod Nordenvinden, med et Fyrtaarn. — Inde paa
Vaagen hersker jevnlig Liv og Virksomhed, særlig om
Sommeren, naar hele dens østlige Halvdel er opfyldt
af indtil 10Ö Nordlandsjægter, som med sine bredbugede
og liøistavnede Skrog og høie Master frembyde et
eiendommeligt Syn. — Af Dampskibsbrygger har
Bergen to: en Pælebrygge udenfor Holbergs Almending
for Fjorddampskibene, og Braadbænksbryggen indenfor
Bergenhus Fæstning, hvor de fleste af de paa Christiania

selves bring their produce to town, twice a year, at
the "Nordfarstævner," as these meetings are called.
At the first „Stævne," which occurs in May and June,
roe and train-oil are the chief articles; at the latter,
which is in July and August, rockfish and dry-fish are
mostly brought. Of late years, however, a considerable
portion of such merchandise is forwarded by steamers
all the year round. Bergen’s shipping-trade, too. is
very considerable; her merchant-navy consists partly
of large clipper-built ships, engaged in the
freight-trade to the Black Sea, America, and the East Indies,
and partly of smaller craft, that are sent out on
fishing-expeditions, or that trade to the Baltic. — Bergen has
direct and frequent steam-communication with all the
coastal towns, with Copenhagen and the Baltic ports,
with Hamburg, Rotterdam, Hull, Newcastle, and New
York. During the last few years, the city has acquired
a fleet of magnificent steamships; we need instance
only a Line of Ocean Steamers registering from 2,000
to 8,500 tons each, which, for the convenience of
emigrants, keep up a fortnightly route between Norway
and New York. The art of shipbuilding stands high
in Bergen; four large dockyards, in, or without the
city, are in constant activity.

The entrance to the town from the fjord is
exceedingly beautiful. Travellers arriving southwards by
steamer, on rounding Kvarvepynten, first catch sight
of the long line of white painted wharehouses in
Sandvigen; not till the vessel has passed Nordnæspynten,
do they get a full view of the town, with the mighty
masses of Ulrikken rising in the background. Arriv-
