the low glaciated rocks.
The vanishing and reappearing islands are
doubtless due to nearly allied action, viz. the
variations of refractive power of the horizontal
strata of air, which are well known to produce
remarkable upliftings of islands and coasts which
are ordinarily below the horizon. This is not
exactly the same as the causes of my sea serpent, but
so directly connected with them as to render the
confounding of the two phenomena by the old
writers very remarkable and suggestive.
