however, that the remaining mills may be classed as the “select few’’, and they are
well equipped to cope, not only with the existing demand, but also with the expansion
in the joinery trade, which is now not only due but overdue.

In regard to furniture, especially, this class of goods (with the exception of
“ladder-backed wooden chairs”) has. until quite lately, been exported only to the countries
immediately adjacent to Sweden, but that on a rather large scale. This is probably
the result of there being no co-operation between the furniture manufacturers.

At the beginning of 1918, however, there was formed, by the fusion of several
furniture manufactories in the country, a large business enterprise under the title of
Aktiebolaget Svenska Möbelfabriker (The Swedish Furniture Factories C:o, Ltd.).-
Although this enterprise has not the character of an Association (for nothing of the kind
exists for the purpose of turning to profit the export possibilities of the Swedish
furniture industry), still, together with the company “A. B. Nordiska Kompaniet” which
has large furniture factories at Nyköping and Arboga, it forms the chief factor in
dealing with the problem of Sweden’s furniture export. The above named companies
have, in spite of the difficulties presented by the inflated rates of exchange, succeeded in
obtaining a market for its productions in several countries. In fact these companies’
productions are well known far outside the borders of Sweden. Only one big Swedish

factory, the Aktiebolaget Åtvidabergs Förenade Industrier. Åtvidaberg, has specialized
in the production and export of office furniture. All this tends to show, that there is
every reason to hope that, after the present disturbed condition of things in the labour
market etc., has resumed its normal state, Sweden will be a factor to reckon with in
the furniture export trade, too.
