fall I was in Minnesota to inspect land and to find a
suitable place for my acquaintances and myself to settle.
X met a number of Swedes, who directed me to Clear
Water Lake, or Scandia. On my arrival I was apprised
of a family said to have come from Pennsylvania some
time ago.,. I found them at the before mentioned lake,
and to my surprise they were acquaintances from that
state. I stayed some days to view the land, which was
unoccupied and the best soil I had seen in Minnesota.
Owing to the fact that this was November and winter
was about to set in, I didn’t remain to take up land,

several families from Pennsylvania, Illinois, and other
states have moved in, and a few have come direct from
Sweden, Our settlement at present consists of
twenty-three Swedish and two Norwegian families, some over
one hundred persons in all. This number will probably

Watertown. This little village which lies on the south
branch of the Crow river was laid out only two years

number of comfortable buildings. A steam boat is said
to be under construction, which will operate on the river
next summer, thereby affording good facilities for
communication by water with Minnesota’s most Important
towns,..

The land is largely wooded with foliferous trees, hut
there are many meadows, varying in size, growing
excellent grass for pasturing cattle. For building and other
purposes we have timber more than sufficient for our
needs.

There are large and small lakes in the vicinity* The
soil is humus from one to three feet deep, with a clay
sub-soil; it is not so sandy as is usually found on
prairies* and it is more productive. It is true that
