outside the Norwegian Synod had given great offense,
and this added just one more obstacle on the road to
unity. We gather this from an editorial in the June, 1860,
number of Kirkelig Maanedstidende, which says, “When
we last summer conferred with our Norwegian and
Swedish brethren in the Illinois Synod, one of the
principal objections against them was directed against their
union with the Synod of Northern Illinois. We tried to
show them that this union was contrary to the word of
God, and an open violation of our Lutheran doctrines.
This our statement was hotly contradicted by the other
side, and all possible arguments were cited to refute us.
We were pained that we should meet objections and
that they did not seem to feel any compunction at this
union, which was dangerous because it was sinful. They
thought that the union would be a blessing to them,
though they should feel it their conscientious duty to
withdraw.”

When in 1860 the Swedes and the Norwegians who
had joined the Synod of Northern Illinois separated
from this body, a chapter which will not be told here,
the Norwegian Synod men seemed to find in this event
cause for rejoicing, and no doubt they entertained some
hope that the entire seceding body would now come
over to them. In an editorial in Kirkelig Maanedstidende
in June, 1860, the paper says, “We rejoice that
they so soon were taken out of the meshes of lies in
which the devil wanted to keep them bound.” But
Esbjörn and Carlson particularly, although they
themselves had seceded from the Synod of Northern Illinois,
took great offense at these accusations and slurs against
it, and they refused to have any further conferences
with the Norwegian Synod men. The above cited
