...Hela förmiddagen sedan det hlifvit bättre wäder,
försökte wi fiska torsk på 45 a 50 famnars djup. Mitt hus
fick intet, men andra fingo, eå att hela fångsten utgjorde

7 stycken På natten var den svagsinta flickan äter

vild och trakterades af föräldrarne med en af modren

medhafd dagg. I fäder reter icke eder barn till vrede_______

På morgonen befanns vid lödning att wi lemnat
Newfoundlands bank______

Copy of Prof. L. P. Esbjorn’s diary, which be kept on his first
Journey to America, literally copied by E. Norelius,
in the summer of 1886.

Diary of a Journey from Gefle to New York with the
ship Cobden, in the summer of 1849. According to
contract, this ship was to be ready to sail on Midsummer’s
Day, but as many things on the ship were unfinished...
one had to wpit, which, both before and after embarking,
caused a deplorable strife between the ship-owner and the
captain on one side and a part of the emigrants on the
other... Truth and justice also demand the admission that
the ship-owner had not kept what he had promised them,
that he had a part of the water taken in the bay where it
was somewhat salty, etc.

On the 25th and 26th of June we moved our things to
the ship where there was great crowding and confusion
in arranging and packing one’s belongings.

June 27 we moved out to the ship in the name of the
Lord and took in possession the lower cabin, our future
home for several weeks, and under wholly new and strange
conditions. In the cabin it was crowded and very un-
