to the police, the Swedish Consul and the Customs Guard,
all of whom were to sign my pass, and to the Doctor of
the Quarantaine who gave me a certificate about the dead
child. Everywhere I was shown the greatest of friendship
and accommodation. After the pass had been inspected in
Helsingborg, off to call on Dr. Wieselgren, who was
greatly surprised. After conversing a while with these
Christian friends, who carefully and with especial interest
listened to the conditions and occasions leading to my
mission journey, we went to Mile. Fryxell’s Pension. Later
we went back to Dr. Wieselgren’s, and afterwards we all,
including the whole group of lovely girlk, accompanied
each others to the beautiful cemetery of the rural
congregation, where the remains of our Emanuel were buried.

Friday, July 13, our feet stepped on Swedish soil for the
last time, for at 6 P. M. the inexorable steamer departed
for Helsingör. After the return to Helsingör, the pass
must again be exhibited and vlséd in the Police and
Customs offices, so that It became a long document. Then a
lot of supplies were bought, money exchanged for me and
others, etc. On reaching the ship, we found Dr.
Wieselgren with wife and two children, Provost P. G. Ahnfelt,
and others, before us. On request, Dr. Wieselgren
delivered a farewell speech In which he expressed that he did
not approve the removals, but, seeing that they had come
to pass, he wished them accompanied by God’s blessing,
and urged the emigrants to emulate the Swedes who
journeyed to New Sweden in the time of Queen Christina.
He admonished us all not to dishonor the Swedish name.
Sunday, July 15, we bade goodby to Sweden, when, at
4 o’clock in the morning, the last place in the Fatherland,
namely, Marstrand, disappeared. In the evening Swedish
fishermen visited us, lying here at a distance of 30 miles
from home, and offering cod, ale, bread and (Swedish
corn- or potato-) brandy for sale.
Monday, July 16, Paul and John fished a lot of mackerel
by hook and line. Many began and continued this fishing
