with two smokestacks, black coal-smoke, and rapid speed
passed us.

Thursday, July 26. Because the storm and the seas
did not abate, the Captain again turned hack towards the
North Sea during the night, and it happened with great
speed. Early in the morning a turn-about was again
made, and all day we cruised up towards the Channel
again. Because we had not been able to continue our
song practices for several days on account of the wind,
the opportunity which better weather offered was used
in the afternoon; but we had not continued long before
an attaok of storm and rain put an end to it all. 6wedish
slothfulness shows itself here also in indifference in
regard to singing and the school-instruction of the children.
Food and drink seem to be the chief end for many.

Friday, July 27. During the night favorable weather
has prevailed so that we in the morning again have come
close to Dover. But a father has with sorrow found a
former store clerk with his daughter and given them a
well merited chastisement. At noon letters home were
sent with English pilots. In the afternoon I conversed
with above named wanton girl, who now cried and
confessed. The same warning was given to two other women.
From Dover proceeds a railroad which soon enters into
the big, steep mountain by the coast, and further ahead
again comes forth. In the evening we found much pleasure
in witnessing how the steam wagons rushed on and later
again came into view further in the West, after their
subterranean journey.

Saturday, July 28. After the evening prayer we were
sadly constrained to listen to the songs of the
carnally-minded, sung from the how. The emigrants suffer great
harm from the two young cabin passengers whom the ship
owner or the captain have admitted.

Sunday, July 29. During the divine service it rained,
and the wind was, besides, strong enough, so that the
sermon had to be short and the service soon thereafter
discontinued.
