against expectations, reached the Newfoundland bank. On
sounding, at 6 o’clock, a depth of 36 fathoms was found,
and a new sounding at 8 o’clock showed 30 fathoms. God
had thus not, as is usual, allowed the current to hinder
us; on the contrary, we were a little more than one
degree Long, ahead of the reckoning The following
night we travelled fast, 8 to 9 knots.
Thursday, August 23. .. .The whole forenoon, after the
weather had improved, we tried to fish for cod at a depth
of 45 to 50 fathoms. My household got nothing, but others
did, so that the whole amounted to 7 fishes... During
the night the feeble-minded girl was again wild, and the
parents gave her a taste of a rope’s end which the mother
had brought along. Ye fathers, provoke not your children
to wrath...

From a Norelius Copy-Book
The following five documents, like the foregoing, are copied
from copies made by E. Norelius. The first one is accompanied
by a partial list of the immigrants concerned and includes 16
names, among them that of Norelius. One letter shows contact
with the Erik Jansonists, two others with one of the early
leaders among the Swedish Baptists.
