1 have also read several letters of other persons from
America who depict conditions there, especially in
temporal respects, as so wonderful and splendid that the
emigration from Sweden seems to be considerably on the
increase for this year and henceforth. From Langaryd,
it is said, 60 to 70 households want to go; they are
studying English seriously there... Last year two households
left this pastorate... hut now, for some time, there have
been auctions every week, and 8 or 9 households, besides
servants and servant-glrls, intend to go... People are
seized as if by an epidemic, and to dissuade them is
impossible. They literally shy away and do not at all want
to talk with any minister or person of social standing
about the matter. ... A few Sundays ago I spoke about
this... that one should not, without a call from God,
.. .leave one’s own country, and that they, who with
indifference and thoughtlessness exchange all of these
advantages for something uncertain, are acting
ungratefully and foolishly. This aroused some to indignation so
that they were saying on the way home ... the ministers
fear for their privileges and that they will not get
servants, etc.
What is one to say?... Is it possible that a lack of
servants will result, or that their wages will rise? Or
will the increase in population keep step with the
emigration?. .. Isn’t there a great deal af frailty connected
with our country? The working class especially must
here exert all its endeavor in order to sustain itself_________
Most of them also write that there is far better
Christianity than here, that swearing and drinking do not exist,
etc You speak of the dangers of Baptism and Method-
