...tell my Countrymen from Blekinge... that we...
arrived here 12 o’clock last Saturday night. A big
difficulty to get houses here for those who did not want to
put up at any hoarding house... so that some are and
have been completely disconsolate... The cholera broke
out among the immigrants Immediately after our arrival,
and a large part of them were confined to their beds. Some
have already gone the way of all flesh... Llljeblad’s
servant girl, Anna Haggman, and Swen Nelson and one
of the children of Hakan Swenson died on Tuesday night
... I wanted to tell you this so that you should not come

over here The food is quite as dear, if not dearer, than

where you are. One can probably get work if one knew
the language. There has been a great demand for servant
girls, of whom my maid and Carl Anderson’s daughter and
the maid Anna have... accepted service for one month
at one dollar a week. John Johnson and Peter Gummeson
have hired out for a farmer for a month for 10 dollars and
board... Dear friends, by all means, stay away from here
... for here is a most miserable time for us poor
immigrants—May God take pity on us... The rest of the
company have with great difficulty secured houses, very poor
ones, to be sure...

Carl Peterson.
