Moline, Nov. 29, 1852.

Good Herr Pastor! Greetings!

As an old acquaintance from our dear native land, 1
hereby presume to greet you, Reverend, also in this new
country. God give that especially your journey to this
country may bring with it benefit and blessings for us,
its new inhabitants. .. .My father has... been quite
satisfied with having come over... hopes to be able, in the
future, by diligence and work, to earn enough for a
carefree sufficiency in old age more easily here than in
Sweden...

For my part, I have not missed Sweden much... I was
long aware of the smooth way In which its less favored
citizens were oppressed, of the too great power of the
higher estates,... the carelessness and... hardness with
which they used this (power) to oppress the poor in a
smooth way... A free country, where all had the same
right to the advantages which the Creator had given them,
this was all I sought, and also found... To be sure, I
missed much here which I had in Sweden; young and...
inexperienced, without parents or faithful friends... the
strange language... also sickness and many many
reverses... lut just this taught me the Philosophy I did
not have before: I understand the vanity... with which

all the societies, splendor and luxury of old Sweden were
tainted... I am no longer the wild cut-up whom the
Pastor saw in me as a school boy and, later, as a cadet...

Yours humbly,

Hans Mattson from Onnestad.
