tions to the contrary notwithstanding, seem peculiarly

suceptible to heart contraction when they get abundant

wealth—he opened his heart and his purse generously

to appeals for support of worthy Swedish projects.

Lately he has given special support and encouragement

to the plans for the proper celebration of the three

hundreth anniversary of the first coming of the Swedes

to the Delaware Colony. Many years ago Mr. Aspegren

became a life member of the Swedish Historical Society

and he has also served for many years as a trustee

of the American-Scandinavian Foundation, being also

one of the large contributors to its scholarship fund.

The illness of Mr. Alfred Söderström, corresponding

secretary of the Society, mention of which was made in

the Year Book last year, has not yielded to medical

treatment, and this fall he came to Minneapolis for

further medical aid. In spite of his illness and age—

he is now 77—Mr. Söderström has worked heroically

during the year in the interest of the Society. As he

has been unable to travel and make personal calls on

members or prospective members and on publishers, he

has sought through letters to reach these friends and

this has meant a prodigious amount of wearisome toil.

If members and others to whom Mr. Söderström writes

in behalf of the Society, knew how profoundly interested

he is in promoting the good cause and under what

serious physical discomfort he is doing the work,

they would surely be more than ever ready to respond

kindly and favorably to his requests, whether it be for

the payment of membership dues or for gifts of books

or other material to the library.
