isolated and immunized against all foreign cultural
influences.

If one considers the matter of international good will
and mutual good understanding with special reference
to America and Sweden, there comes to mind a number
of events in the year just drawing to a close that are
most gratifying. The discussion of the immigration
quota law called forth a number of newspaper and
magazine articles on the various European racial groups
that seek admittance to America, and these without any
exception, as far as we know, gave unstinted praise to
the Swedes as possessing in a preeminent degree those
qualities and that training which constitute most essential
elements in good American citizenship. Certain it is
that since the Swedes first came to this country as
immigrants no such generous praise has been given them,
nor has so much publicity been given to it. On the other
hand, the idealism, and achievements of the
Swedish-Americans, as well as of the American people as a whole,
has in Sweden found the most eloquent and convincing
defender and interpreter. We of course refer to
Archbishop Söderblom. In January, soon after the return
from his extended American trip, he gave an address ®
at the annual meeting of the Swedish Academy, on which
occasion he chose to discuss the idealistic forces of
American life, and in particular paid a tribute to the
Swedish Americans for their achievements, not only as
producers of material wealth in their new homes, but
more especially as creators and guardians of the higher
ideal values of life. This must have been a new
experience in the life of that notable assembly. Who could
