Of a morning we had to chop out our boats with axes and
iron bars, and the ropes and cables were frozen stiff. The
frost was very keen, for although we had fires both fore and

round until they became so crowded that some of them
were pushed back again into the current. They grounded

us timely warning of them. They swam merrily down-
stream like small islands, grating noisily one against the
