On the 13th May the ass caravan was ready to start,
Shereb Lama on Golden Ears, with Yolbars on a Cord.
and set off under the command of old Dovlet. He ex-
pected soon to overtake the main caravan, for he was
going up by a shorter route. My strength was thus more
scattered than it had ever been before. Here was I in
Charkhlik ; the main body of the caravan was on the
road to Abdal ; the ass caravan was marching up the
Astyn-tagh ; Shagdur and Cherdon had not yet returned
