for the Tibetans had been there, and had left the remains
of their dinners behind them. The yak-dung which was
lying about had ’ been turned over, so that it might dry
better ; evidently, therefore, the Tibetans intended to come
back to fetch it.
The dogs began to bark again. But it was only a false

alarm—confound them ! One of the mules had broken
loose from the rope and gone off up an adjacent hill. Her
escapade, however, completely demoralised one of her
fellows, and I had an awful business to catch the two of
them again. For that half-hour, at any rate, I could not
complain of not having anything to do.
After giving ourselves a couple of hours’ extra sleep, we
proceeded again next day, the 31st July, towards the south-
east, through a very broken country. As I rode, the saddle
was so wet, it tiop-flopped against me at every step, and after
