figure lias 2ji = 32 and the one lo the right 2/1 = 42. A good picture of
the range of variation shown by the triploid progeny is given in Fig. 2,
which shows one typical leaf from each of 19 plants. All leaf cliaracters
varv here in the liighest degree. This is the case with leaf-si/.e, leaf-form.
serrature, and shaping of the leaf-base. No clear relation has heen
brought out between leaf characters and chromosome number.
Pro-bably, the great variation in the size of the leaves is only in part an
expression of specific »leaf factors» and is lo a larger extent a reflection
of the general vitality of the plants.
