HENNING HORN AF RANTZIEN

Fig. 1. Total distribution of Phleum arennrium l. The frequency in Portugal and
Italy is understated. Black dots = ± spontaneous occurrenees. Small opcn circles
= adventitious occurrenees. Large open circles = localitios in literature not lo be
exactly indicated ön the map. Some localities stated as black dots are possibly of
an adventitious nature though that fact is not indicated in literature. Some records
(about 1(1) have been omitted, partly .statements from tlie coasts in literature which
are based ön material not of a certainty correctly identified, partly some old records
which have not been identified ön available maps.

cultivation, where the species has accidentally appeared as an
adventitious plant. The distribution shows rather stränge features in the
Mediterranean Area. Here liiere are several disjunctions which are often
difficult to explain (e.g. the greater part of the coast of Spain, Dahnatia
and Asia Minor). The map (Fig. 1) also indicates that the species is
lacking ön manv of the islands in the Mediterranean Sea, without anv
evident cause (the Balearic Islands, Sardinia: Grete, Cyprus). However,
it may be remarked that Phl. arenarium cail verv well be overlooked
in these territories, above all in the less explored southern parts,

with Fig. 1 it should be emphasized that the rareness of the species
in Italy is not real hut dependent ön lacking information. Phl. arenarium
is said to be ± common at the Italian coasts (Arcangeli 1894, Fiori
