STUDIES IN PH LE UM ARENARIUM
375
Fig. 2. North European distribution of Phleum arenarium L. Black dots = ±
sponta-neous occurrences. Open circles = adventilious occurrencés. So me adventitious
localities in the north are situated N of the boundaries of the map (ef. Fig. II.
1923. Parlatore 1848). In Sicily. however, the species is rare
(Parla-tore I.e.). The frequencv as regards Portugal is understated (cf.
Cou-tinho 1913). The species occurs here in the deparlments of Minho,
Beira, Estremadura and Alemtejo, all situated at the coast. In other
parts of the species’ area. the frequencv and distribution seem in general
to be correct.
According to the aforesaid concerning the location of the
distribution centre to the western parts of Central Europé, the pronounced S\V
charader of the Scandinavian distribution is no astonishing feature.
As seen from the map ön the distribution of this species in northern
Europé (Fig. 2). the bulk of !lie localities is situated in Jutland, the
Danish Islands, Scania and the counties of the west coast of Sweden.
From here, and especially from the distribution area of eastern Scania
a narrow offshoot stretches in a XE direction över the islands of Öland
