TYCHO NOR LINDH

as complete as possible. The outbreak of the second World War
pre-vented me, however, from borrowing all the material 1 wished to see
before i published this monograph. I particularly regret that 1 had no
opportuiiity of studying the herbarium material of Dimorphotlieca at
Cape Town and Kew. In the near future I hope to have the opportuiiity
of working up these and other collections, and as 1 intend to publish
a second part of the Phytogeograpliy I shall be able to make a number
of vahiable additions lo the distribution statements published in Part I
of »Studies in the Calenduleae».

Probably I shall also have lo make some modifications in the
arrangement of the species after studying möre complete material of
Dimorphotheca and the other genera. 1 hope especially to see möre
fruiting material of certain species. Several species have been much
collected in the flowering stage, e.g. most of those belonging to sect.
Blaxiiun of the genus Osteospermum, but rarely in the fruiting stage.
Thus, the variation in the shape of the aclienes in some species is not
yet sufficiently known to me. A few species have not even been found
with ripe aclienes, e.g. Osteospermum triquetrum L. f., which is known
from a dozen collections, the first about two hundred years old (Herb.
Berg.), and their taxonomical position is thus uncertain.

Lanza’s monograph of Calendula (1919) is now becoming
some-what out-of-date, much new material of that genus having accumulated
in the herbaria during the last twenty-five years. Better knowledge of
the variation of the species in Calendula has been gained by means of
this new material and by cullivation experiments. The systematic
arrangement of Calendula has already been somewhat changed
(Ja-handiez & Maire 1934) and a revision of the genus is likely lo result
in several alterations in the delimitation of the species. I have
there-fore only indicated Ihe main features of the phytogeography of that
genus.

The two monotypic genera Dipterocome and Eriachaenium differ
in several essential characlers from the o|ber genera in the |ribe
(I pp. 22, 33). Similarly, Garuleum considerably deviates from the
remaining genera as regards the shape and structure of the disc styles
(I p. 31, fig. 1 h, ]). 33). In a subsequent trealise 1 intend lo give a möre
detailed account of the taxonomy and phytogeography of these three
genera.

In this phytogeographical part I have also discussed the
inter-relation of the genera and suggested the main lines of evolution
in the tribe.
