a. ii. magnusson

cincto. Stratum gonidiale granulis impletum. Hypothecium hyalinum,
oleoso-inspersum. Thecium suballum, epithecio granuloso, Pd + laete
ochraceo. Paraphyses apice baud incrassatae. Sporae octonae,
sub-minutae, pariete leviter inaequali, haud constrictae.

Thallus + large, either very |hin and ± smooth, or someliraes
thicker, subareolate, or uneven and darker. Apothecia 0.5—1 mm wide,
some even pale brown (shady situation), generally black, margin in
thicker specimens also thicker and slighlly undulate. Inner structure
in both formae similar.

Sections of apolhecium 0.4—0.45 mm thick, very convex, pale
part 200—250 [j. deep, thicker apothecia K01I+ yellowish. Margin about
70 fj. thick, filled wilh a granular gonidial stratum, continuous below,
Pd—, or stratum mainly horizontal wilh gonidia deficient at centre,
in KOH with distinct, 8—12 [j. large gonidia among igranules. Exciple
indistinct. Hypothecium about 100 u high, hyaline, filled with oil-drops,
möre distinct in KOH, hyphae intricate. Thecium 90—100 u high, 1 +
dark blue like hypothecium; upper 10—12 [j. pale brownish yellow,
granular, apices of paraphyses visible in KOH, 1.5—1.7 u but still
granular, in Pd dull orange forming dense crystals. Spores 8 in clavate
asci, 75X12 [j., numerous, often degenerate, 12—15X6—7 |j., greenish
brown, wall rather thin, somewhat uniform, in young spores thicker
at apices, 1.5—1.7 jj., and at sep tum with its distinct central lamella,
septum often only 1 [j. thick. Spores ±uniseriate, in KOH to 17X8 [j.
large.

Florida: Sanford 1909. Rapp, ön trees (hb. Mn) s. n. R. sophodes.

The black apothecia remind of those in R. roboris, but not the
thin, grey thallus. Characterized especially by its chemical reaction in
the epithecium, the oilv hypothecium and the lasting grämdes in the
gonidial stratum.

3. R. sophodes (Ach.) Hellb.

Although R. sophodes is said to grow »ön trees and rocks,
through-out the United States» (Fink 1935) and by Hasse (1913) and Herre
(1910) said lo be common in California I have not vet seen real sophodes
from U.S.A. — Reliq. Tuck. no. 88 is a new species: subminuta II. Magn.
Another from »Brit. America, Eckeeldt 1891—2» ön earth is Leciden
(Psorci) demissa (L.). See also other new species below!

4. R. pyrina (Ach.) Arn.

Not quoted by Fink (1935). A small specimen from Iowa:
