One apothecium 1.4X0.5—0.(3 mm in section, conslricted to 0.6
111111 at base which is dark- to blackish-brown. Margin about 100 [j.
thick with 8—11 [j. large gonidia in a 70 [j. thick stratum, continuous
below but verv lax in a lax, air-filled medulla, 70—80 jj. thick. Below
it a 100—150 ij. (hick cortex ön most part of the underside, I—, pale
yellowish brown from very minute granules, in KOH taking ön a
distinctly yellow, soon disappearing colour, hyphae in KOH
perpen-dicular towards underside and parallel, lumina 1.5 [j., + cylindric.
Exciple indistinct at edge, 20—30 [j. at centre and refracting, hyphae
4—5 [j,, + distinct, horizontally + intricate, 1+ blue. Thecium 100 [j.
high, hyaline, 1+ dark blue; upper 15 [j. sordid dark yellowish brown.
Paraphyses 1.7—2 [j,, distinct, of different length, apices in KOH
distinct, subcontiguous, 3.5—4.5 ij., clavate, brown. Spores 8, 20—24 X
10—12(14) [j., apical wall 5—6 [j., convex inwards, septum 5 [j., central
lamella visible only in II2S04, thin.
Habitat. Ön vegetabilia, (probably) ön rocks, apparently not
directly ön röck.
Locality. California: San Francisco, D. Bolander (hb. Nyl.
no. 28731, called R. mniaraea by Nyl.) with bis note: Sp. 23—25X
9-15 [j..
R. Bolanderi resembles R. mniaraea v. mniaraeiza in its whitish
thallus colour and plane, black apothecia, but is separated by the thick,
granular cortex, KOH+ yellow, I—, ils thinly marginate,
Lecanora-resembling apothecia, and its shorter spores. Il resembles turfacea in
the thick cortex but is separated by its thallus and cortex I —.
R. succedens (Nyl.) Macoun, Cat. Canad. Plants: 117, 1902.
-Lecidea succedens Nyl., Flora 49:372, 1866. The authentic specimen
from Ben Lawers, Scotland, is saxicolous and seems to be a Buellia
species with 11—14X4.5—5.5 [j. spores with thin wall. Macoun’s plant
from Newfoundland i.s unknown to me, as also the plant menlioned
by Hasse (Lich. fi. S. Calif.: 126, 1913) from bark of Pseiidotsuga at
about 1000 m and upwards. Spores 20—32X11- -16 [j..
26. R. mniaraea (Ach.) Th. Fr.
Colorado: Newcomb 1919, at 10500 ft. Ön ground near Tiho(?)
line; Corona 1918, at 12000 ft., botli called R. turfacea, Ch. Plitt
(hb. Mn).
Another specimen from Corona at 10000 ft, 1929 Plitt, over
mosses, is Lecidea sp., named R. amniocola. A third specimen in (S.:
hb. Vräng) from James Peak 1921, at 10500 ft, Plitt s. n. R. amnio-
