Paraphyses 1 1.5 a, contiguous a I.so in KOH, apices 3—3.5 a,
irregu-larlv clavate. paraphyses niuch hranched, especially towards apices.
Spores ß—8 in 100- 120X35—38 ij. large. swollen asci, 35—45X14—
17 ij., very dark brown, slightlv constricted at centre, wall rather
uniform, 1.5 ij., at apices 2.5—3.5 ij., not convex inwards.

Habitat. Ön cortex wilhout accompanying species.

Localitij. (1 a n a d a. Mackenzie, belween Fort York and
Coppermine River, where Sir John Franklin made a journey 1819—22,
probablv together wilh Hooker. Ön label: »In America arctica, ex hb.
Hooker (Franklin)», in hb. Nylander.

This species belongs lo the ascociscana group (with adirondackii
and oregona) and resembles the laber very mucli in appearance and
structure. But oregona bas a thick cellulär cortex at base, a higher
hymenium, not branclied paraphyses and ön Ihe whole broader, nol
constricted spores wilh lumina broader Ihan high, a verrucose thallus
and larger apothecia.

The specimen is only mentioned by Lindsay in Transact. Linn.
Soc. London 27:365. 1807 and one spore is figured in tal). 49, fig. 21
with uniformly thickened wall. which is nol quite in accordance with
the facts.

24. R. turfacea (Wg) Kbr.

R. turfacea is recorded by Hasse (1913) from earth in California
and by Fink (1935) from soil and rocks in several states, but I have
seen no specimen from the conlinent, only from the Aleulian Islands,
Unalaska, 1932, Hultén (U.j. But a couple of specimens, named
turfacett belonged lo R. mnittraett (which see). Herre records il (Bryol. 20:
84, 1917) from Washington, Ml Baker al 6000 fi. From Canada il is
quoted i.a. bv Lyngij (1940).

25. R. Bolanderi II. Magn. n. sp.

Thallus albidus, tennis, contiguus, minute granulatus, KOH+
fla-vescens. Apothecia crebra, sessilia, rotundala, disco atro, piano, margine
tenui, albido, leviier prominente cincto. Cortex apotheciorum crassus,
I—, granulatus, KOH flavus. Thecium subaltum, apicibus
paraphy-sarum fuscis, clavatis. Sporae oclonae, majusculae, pariete inaequaliler
incrassato.

The specimen seen only 1 X0.7 cm wide, surface uneven from
0.1—0.2 mm large granules of rather uniform size. Apothecia 0.6—
1.3 mm wide, some also concave with rather Ihick, subcrenulate margin.
