Botaniska Notiser 1947, Häfte 2. Lund

Ön the Distribution of Chara tomentosa L. round
the Baltic and some Remarks ön its Specific Epithet.

Bv Sven O. Björkman.

In July 1940 I spent some clays at the coast of the southern part of
the Swedish prov. Hälsingland, and there I found Chara tomentosa L. as
now to the province. In the inner part of Granöfjärden |parish of Skog)
a rich population of the species was met with. Granöfjärden is a shallow
cove and the depth at the Iocality would lie about 70 cm: bottom oozy.
From the same place I recorded Potamogeton perfoliatus L. and
Mi/rio-phyllum spicatum L. The specimens of Ch. tomentosa were rather tall
— the dried ones are about ’/a m- Here and there the specimens reached
the water-level bul generally the steinpoints were to be found 10 cm
under the level; the height of the water might have been normal for
this time of the year. The C/!rtrc/-population appeared with a red colour,
hut as usual the specimens, when dried losl their red colour and turned
bright green. According to the prevalent männer of the charologists (see
Hasslow 1931, pp. 71— 72; Holtz 1903, pp. 34—35) a description of
my specimens would be as follows: »Chara tomentosa L. 6, f. marina
(s. murida), elongata, micracantha, niaeroteles». From the description
appears that only male specimens were found, hu| as samples were
picked up only at two or three spöts nothing wi|| be said for certain
about the ferlility conditions of the species in this Iocality and at this
time of the year.

The description of the Iocality given above corresponds well to
what is known hefore about C.h. tomentosa in brackish water. Shallow
havs and coves are common tvpes of localities. Olsen (1944, p. 94)
states that the species is to be met with at a depth of 20 m, bul that
refers to freshwater conditions (Sönder, 1890, p. 34). Ch. tomentosa
seenis lo be confined to the shallow coves of the inner part of Ihe
skerries and this is also stated by the Finnish authors Ehnhglm (1936),
Ulvinen (1937) and Luther (1945). Ulvinen and Luther refer Ihe
species to the intrataeniate (s. lat.) hydrophvtes. Luther states
