are only scantily ramified, but ultimately at a certain depth abruptly
break up into fine and short rootlets.
When the sessile oak constitutes closed woods or forms part of
woods together with other trees, Quercus Robur, Fagus silvatica,
Ccir-pinus Betulus and Pinus silvestris, the field layer of the vegetation is
mostly composed of small shrubs: Vaccinium Myrtillus and V.
Vitis-idaea are the most important. The dominant species in the bottom layer
are Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium Schreberi. Especially in
northernmost Skåne the sessile oak occurs moreover as separate bushes
and small trees on heather-clad hills (Ca//un«-heath).
4. Ecology — experiments. By the field investigations which have
been presented in the preceding chapter il has been shown that
Q. pet i aea is restricted in Skåne to acid soils.
In the following pages 1 will give a short account of some culture
experiments which have been accomplished with particular stress on
the significance of the edaphic factors, whereas competition lias been
eliminated as much as possible.
Acorns were collected in the autumn of 1944 in Skäralid on the
highland of Söderåsen. Here occur the largest woods of pure sessile
oak that I have seen within the province. No trees of Q. Robur nor of
hybrids are found in the immediate proximity. The area has been
