thoroughly investigated by Mr. Torsten Håkansson, fil. måg., who
has drawn the distribution map (fig. 6).

The mother tree was carefully selected in a place sheltered from
winds, above all from easterly winds, about 1.5 km from Ihe mouth
of the deep and narrow valley. The tree represents typical Q. petraea
and is surrounded by several individuals of the same species. The risk
of fertilization by pollen from Q. Robur, which is common around the
mouth of Ihe valley, was thus deemed very insignificant. The plants
which grew up in 1945 also represented morphologically pure sessile oak.

The acorns were collecled just at the time when they were on the
point of falling off. No acorns were collecled on the ground. They were
stratified in sand in the Institute for Breeding of Forest Trees, Ekebo.

In the spring of 1945 acorns were put into t he ground in three
different places: at Ekebo, in the Botanical Garden, Lund, and at Regie
about 10 km east of Lund. These cultures will, however, not be
discussed here. A fourth series was planted in wooden boxes in the
Botanical Garden, Lund. For this purpose 500 acorns were selected, as
equally developed and homogeneous as possible, for the size of the
fruits is of great importance for the further development of the plants
