Botaniska Notiser 1947, Häfte 4. Lund

Festuca polesica Zapal., its Chromosome
Number and Occurrence in Denmark.

By Tyge W. Böcher.

The Plant-Anatomical Institute, University of Copenhagen.

In the summers of 1945 and 1947 Festuca polesica was found on
two new localities in North-west Sealand and in 1947 its occurrence
here and in Ihe island of Bornholm in the Baltic was more thoroughly
examined.

Festuca polesica belongs to the Festuca ovin</-species group. It is
well separated from F. trachyphylla Hack (— F. duriuscula auctt.) by
its glabrous, very stiff and pungent leaves and broad and abrupt
sheaths. In habit it may remind somewhat of Nardus stricta, having
sometimes almost horizontal leaves. In particular this is the case with
the F. polesica population at Klitborg in Sealand. Here the plant grows
behind the dunes in a dry sandy area where it is exposed to the
trampling of hundreds of bathers. In culture the plants from this locality
seem to maintain the horizontal position of their leaves.

The chromosome number of F. polesica was determined in material
from two Danish localities, viz. Klitborg and Raghammer Odde. In both
places 14 chromosomes were counted in root lip metaphases (Fig. 1).
The same number is found in several species within the F. ovina group
(see summary in Nannfeldt 1940. pp. 25—26), but not in F.
trachyphylla, which has 2n = 28 (material from Sealand) and 42 (Levitsky &
Kuzmina 1927). In material from West Greenland of a robust race
which verv much reminds of F. trachyphylla the number 2n = 42 was
counted. Thus F. polesica and F. trachyphylla and related forms are
well separated also with respect to chromosome number.

Festuca polesica [F. sabulosa (Anderss.) Lindh, fil.] and closely
related species or subspecies fF. psammophila (Hack.) Fritsch and
F. pallens Host] have a continental, Central-East-European distribution
with radiations to the mountains of southern Europe from Spain to the
Balkan Peninsula. The north west limit of typical F. polesica runs from
