Winter in Canada
Although the Canadian winter brings with it the inconvenience of sub-zero
weather, heavier clothing, and more indoor living, it is at the same time, the
season of the year most enjoyed by Canadians. It is the season associated
with family reunions, Christmas and the New Year.
Christmas in Canada is celebrated in much the same tradition as it was
enjoyed by early British and French settlers. From the Old World have
come rich folk-lore and colourful customs. Early pioneers brought from
England, Scotland and Ireland, the roast goose, mistletoe, and plum pudding
with brandy sauce. From old Normandy came the Bâche de Noël and the
Crèche. Similar traditions from other European countries have also been
carefully preserved through the years, while the new ways of the industrial
age and modern living have added to the old. Continued on page 4

I] est singulier d’observer combien la neige change d’aspect selon les objets
qu’elle touche et selon I’heure du jour. Aujourd’hui, le ciel est bas, et diffuse
une lumière uniforme qui ne laisse d’ombre nulle part. Elle pourrait aussi
bien prendre sa source dans la terre. L’horizon est étrangement limité, et
donne aux fermes, aux bâtiments de toute sorte qui s’échelonnent le long de la
route, cette crudité des lignes qu’on retrouve dans certains décors stylisés.
