The hydro-electric development at Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, one of the five great
power plants now operated on the St. Maurice River develops almost 500,000 horse-
power. Five more sites on the same river are being prepared for development.
Hydro-electric Power in Canada
The people of Canada are greatly dependent upon hydro-electric power
to maintain the economic activity of the country and the living standard
of the individual. Life in Canada is so adjusted to the existence of inexpensive
electricity that it is difficult for the average Canadian to conceive of being
without it. It is, for instance, a poorly equipped house that does not have
among its conveniences an electric toaster, radio, vacuum cleaner, refrigerator
and washing machine. Such conveniences are made possible by the low cost
of electricity in Canada where consumers are paying less per unit than any-
where else in the world. In the industrial areas of the east and on the west
coast where hydro-electric power is especially inexpensive, the task of the
housewife has been lightened, and hundreds of new industries have been
created within the past two decades. Ninety-eight per cent of all Canadian
production relies on hydro-electric power, yet potential hydro-electric power
in Canada has been exploited only to the extent of about 20%. Electricity
has also made it possible for Canadians to communicate with each other
over this broad expanse of country, a fact which is very important to the
organization and management of a country whose population is so widely
dispersed.
