munity. In 1926, when construction
was begun on the hydro-electric devel-
opments and the great smelter in the
Saguenay, there were no housing
facilities in the area suitable for the
number of people required to build
and maintain these vast projects. Early in the scheme a large tract of farm
land was purchased, and architects laid out a town, designed to provide
shopping, recreational, educational and other facilities. This town was called
Arvida, a name formed by taking the first two letters in the names of
ARthur VIning DAvis, a pioneer in the aluminum industry.
Arvida is particularly notable for its homes and its home life. Most of the
homes in the city were built by the company, or to the company’s specification,
and are placed far apart on wide streets with attractive lawns and gardens.
Since rentals on company-owned houses are very low, there is not much in-
centive for home ownership, but in spite of this about 25% of the homes in
the community are privately owned. Since Arvida is in the centre of one of
the best game and fish areas of the Province of Quebec, with the Laurentide
National Park directly south and the vast forests of the Lake St. John area
to the north, the recreation facilities of the area are excellent. The citizens
have one of the highest industrial wage scales in Canada; housing is relatively
cheap; and educational and recreational facilities are abundant. It is not
surprising that the city of Arvida has the highest per capita birth rate in
Canada, far above the national average. To provide for these children of all
ages, Arvida has fifteen schools ranging from kindergarten to high school,
as well as a very well-equipped trade school for the wood working and metal
working trades. Growing up in a happy and pleasant environment, and
helped by excellent educational facilities, Arvida children are able to make
economic advances far beyond anything dreamed of by their ancestors.’ The
average standard of living in Arvida is probably higher than that of any
comparable city in the province, with most families having telephones, elec-
trical lights, electrical appliances, and automobiles.
