Vancouver

Canada’s third largest city, a youthful, spirited, enterprising community,
covers 44 square miles at the foot of the mountains by the edge of the sea.
Known as the Pacific gateway of British Columbia, Vancouver bears the
name of an English sea captain who in 1792 passed from the Straits of Georgia
through the First Narrows and entered the beautiful inland harbour, Burrard
Inlet. For years it was known as “‘Gastown”’ and “Granville”, but eventually
it received its present name when it was incorporated as a city in 1886. With the
arrival of the first transcontinental train a year later to link “steel with keel”,
Vancouver began to fulfil its destiny as the chief port of western Canada —
a destiny still further assured with the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.

The first white child was born in Vancouver in 1886. A few months later
the entire settlement went up in flames, but before the year was out the
hastily reconstructed community was housing 2,500 people. Within two
generations it increased two-hundred fold. The Burrard Dry Dock, a one-man
shipyard 50 years ago now hires 12,000 employees, and in World War II,
turned out over a hundred 10,000-ton cargo vessels. Vancouver’s sawmills
buzz through 15,000,000 feet of lumber every year, a process that leaves so
much sawdust that many citizens burn it as fuel. Today, Burrard Inlet is
