eo. emergence as an independent North American state has been
accompanied by the increasing awareness of Canadians that they possess
what may be the largest untapped storehouse of natural resources in the world.
Canadians are daily becoming more conscious of the power which lies within
their grasp, and more determined to use that power in ways which will benefit
not only themselves but the whole world.
Recent discoveries of huge iron-ore deposits at Steep Rock Lake in Ontario
and in the wilderness on the Quebec-Labrador boundary show promise of
playing an even greater role in the North American economy than that played
by the once fabulously rich Mesabi iron range in the United States.
Canada’s known hydro-electric reserves amount to more than 55 million
horsepower, of which less than one-third has yet been harnessed. The war
gave great impetus to hydro-electric development, and this development is
continuing at a rapid pace, especially in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.
One of the most significant recent discoveries has been the huge oil reservoir
in Alberta where the Redwater field alone has proven reserves of 360 million
barrels. Farther north in the tar sands lies the largest known single oil. de-
posit in the world. There it is estimated that at least 250 billion barrels of
oil are awaiting use. With such supplies as these Canada will quickly become
independent of outside sources of supply, and will become a major exporter

Some of the world’s largest deposits of uranium and the other radio-active
minerals lie in Canada’s far north. Port Radium, on Great Bear Lake in

Canadian industry. Production figures from the uranium mines there are
not available, but enough is already produced to supply much of the United
States’ demand as well as that of Canada’s own atomic pile at Chalk River,
Ontario.
Canada is assured of an adequate supply of such critical metals as titanium,
a metal whose lightness and heat-resisting qualities open up possibilities which
