publicly-owned enterprise administered by the Canadian Broadcasting Corpo-
ration which is responsible to Parliament. Programs are offered in both the
French and English language. Provision has been made for privately-owned
television stations and commercially-sponsored telecasts and these will make
their appearance at a time yet to be determined.
The start of regular TV service in Canada comes after several years of
research and practical study of the new medium. The corporation’s engineers
have been studying the operations of television in all parts of the world for
many years; and more recently, several members of the engineering and
program staff have travelled to many parts of Europe and to the United
States to pave the way for Canada’s entry into the field.
Active preparations for Canadian TV got under way between three and
four years ago. Since that time, staff has been recruited and trained and the
necessary equipment has been purchased and installed. A few months before
experimental telecasts went on the air, the training of artists and all others
involved in the service was put to the test in closed circuit programs which
were confined to the studios. In this way, Canadian performers and technicians
had a chance to perfect their roles before taking a hand in regular programs
which are now available to Canadians in their homes.
