Canadian Composers

Musical composition in Canada has made notable strides in this century,
particularly during the years since the end of the First World War. The |
creative impulse has been rekindled by the new-found vigor of Canada herself—
a vigor which started to manifest itself noticeably in the decade from 1920
to 1930 and which has been marked by unprecedented developments since
1940 or thereabouts.

Canadian composers have been finding encouragement in the greater

_ appreciation shown for their work, both at home and abroad. The Canadian

= public has become more and more aware of the existence of its own composers.

At the same time, audiences in other American and in European countries

have displayed increasing interest in distinctly Canadian music—a trend which

is continuing. This interest is being stimulated by the expanding activities

of the CBC’s Transcription Service, a service which makes Canadian music
available to radio networks in many countries of the world.

Neil Chotem: Mr. Chotem has been composing

since the age of six and gave his first recital at

seven. He is heard frequently on the CBC and

the BBC and has appeared as soloist with
leading Canadian orchestras.

Neil Chotem: M. Chotem compose depuis l’âge €

de six ans; à sept ans il donnait son premier

récital. Depuis, il a été soliste des principaux

orchestres canadiens et compte de nombreuses
auditions à la CBC et à la BBC.
