Television in Canada
The story of Canadian television reflects the tremendous progress taking
place in this country. In order to make television available to all Canadians
across the vast reaches of this continent, Canadian television, with its publicly
owned and private elements, is faced with the great challenges which have
had to be met by every major development in Canadian history. Enormous
geographical distances have to be bridged to establish a national television
network serving a population small in relation to the high cost of television
production; moreover Canada is a bilingual country and television programs
are produced in both English and French.
When the first two stations began operating in Montreal and Toronto
little more than three years ago there were only 180,000 television sets in
Canada. Since then Canadians have bought two million sets to view programs
of 33 stations operating in all parts of the country.
The existing network of television stations in the Provinces of Ontario
and Quebec is going to be extended during the next two years until all Canadian
television stations will be linked by microwave connection to form a nation-
wide network from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
