Stratford Shakespearean Festival

At the turn of the century the theatre was one of the main forms of entertain-
ment in Canada and great artists of that time like Eleonora Duse and Sarah
Bernhardt appeared as far west as Winnipeg and Edmonton. Since then the
theatre has steadily lost ground in competition with the cinema and the
preoccupation of Canadians with the development of their vast realm. The
past decade, however, has seen a marked revival of the theatre in Canada; it
is now possible for a great many actors to follow their profession in their
own country, and many other Canadian artists who have achieved fame on
the stage of London and New York are returning to perform in Canada.

The Shakespearean Festival in the small Canadian town of Stratford in
Ontario, highlights the revival of the stage in Canada. Now in its fourth
season, the Festival is well established and has the full support of the theatre-
going public. The classic simplicity of the amphitheatre-style well of the
playhouse with its Elizabethan stage lends itself not only to the production
of plays by Shakespeare, but also provides a fitting background for such
tragedies as Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. Along with the playhouse, set in the
attractive parklands on the bank of the Avon river, is a small concert hall
and a second theatre. There, visitors to the Festival can listen to some of the
best musicians and orchestras of Canada and see plays produced in both
French and English.
