The Plastics Industry in Canada

The remarkable expansion of the plastics industry in Canada during the last

ten years exemplifies the growth of Canadian industry as a whole. | |
lastics have become indispensable to every phase of Canadian life and

an ever widening variety of plastic products is being used in homes, factories,

offices and hospitals, in the packaging of food, in transportation and com-

munications.

To satisfy the growing popular demand for plastic products the Canadian
chemical industry rapidly expanded its plant capacity and since 1946 has
increased the production of plastic resins fourfold. This growth has been aided
by an abundant supply of raw materials like petroleum, natural gas, coal and
salt. The Canadian chemical industry therefore can supply the manufacturer
with the plastic resins he transforms into boat hulls and draperies, pot handles
and rain coats.

Of the 14 basic types of materials and their many variations the most
important plastic resins are Phenolic, Vinyl, Polystyrene and Polyethylene,
all of which are produced in Canada in such quantities that they satisfy not
only the home market, but have also become an important export commodity.

Listeners to CBC International Service broadcasts hear a variety of talks
on new trends in Canadian industry.
