The Canadian Pulp and Paper Industry
The beginning of winter brings the height of the cutting season to the endless
forests of this country; over 200,000 of Canada’s toughest men slash through
miles of timberland to replenish the stockpiles of the pulp and paper industry.
All during the winter trees are cut and logs trimmed and piled in preparation
for the spring break-up. As soon as the hot spring sun melts snow and ice,
the great rivers of Canada are choked with logs floating to the paper mills.
Within the frame-work of a free economy, the 130 mills operated by 78
pulp and paper companies have developed into one of the world’s major
enterprises. Their annual output of some ten million tons has made Canada
by far the greatest exporter of pulp and paper. More than half of this output
consists of newsprint, most of which is exported to the United States to satisfy
the ever increasing demand of this market. The remainder is either sold as
wood pulp or immediately manufactured in the mills into all grades of paper,
paperboard, building board and many other allied products.
In the Western world, Canada has the last large coniferous forests capable
not only of maintaining such a large industry, but also of substantially
increasing its production on a permanent yield basis.
Listeners to International Service broadcasts frequently hear talks about
many aspects of this industry which is one of the mainstays of the Canadian
economy.
