Canada’s Northland
Today Canada is developing the North with its one and a half million square
miles of sparsely populated land. During the past decade the wealth of the
Yukon and the Northwest Territories has attracted many Canadian men and
women who are opening up this vast store-house.
Equipped with up-to-date machinery and supplies Canadian scientists and
workers have already done much to exploit the oil and ore deposits of the
northland on a commercial basis. Modern means of transportation have made
this possible by overcoming some of the obstacles created by the enormous
distances between the industrial centers of Canada and the northern sites.
Gold, silver and the all important radium and uranium metals are being mined
in increasing quantities and large deposits of lead, zinc, nickel, asbestos and
iron are forever adding to the impressive production figures of this country.
Canada’s interest in her North has been accelerated by the urgent need
of security in recent years. This has led to tremendous developments in defence
installations—developments which have brought new economic and social
changes for the Eskimos and Indians who inhabit the areas.
