notes, I reproduce fairly exactly the tenor of his
talk:
After having expressed, in the warmest and
most flattering terms, his great appreciation of
my contribution to the exchange of prisoners
of war and to the work of the Swedish Red Cross
in Holland and elsewhere, he threw himself into
what I can only describe as an oration. It was
delivered in a voice that at times trembled with
emotion, at others resembled a roar suitable only
to the tribune of a packed Kroll Opera House. In
between these extremes, he commented on his
own personal achievements with simulated
humility. He began his address by explaining to me the
differences between National Socialism and
Bolshevism. In his view Hitler had succeeded in
convincing the German workingman of the
necessity of retaining the classes that make up society,
though these had to be adapted to the Nazi
ideology. Bolshevism, on the other hand, had
taught that the privileged classes must be
“liquidated.” This, in Ribbentrop’s opinion, was the
fundamental difference between the two systems.
