HOHEN-LÜCHEN
February 1945
My hopes were not to be disappointed. My
request for a meeting with Himmler had been
granted, and at five o’clock on the afternoon of
February 12th I was fetched by Schellenberg and
driven with him to Hohen-Lüchen, a large
hospital seventy-five miles from Berlin in a northerly
direction. The head physician, Professor Gebhart,
himself down with pneumonia, received me in his
sickroom and gave me some data about his
establishment. It was filled to the last bed, he said.
Among the German refugees in it were numerous
children, about eighty of whom had had to have
amputations because of frostbite and bullet
wounds. It was a grim picture the Professor
presented to me, and it was against this background
that I was to meet Heinrich Himmler, supreme
head of the SS, the Gestapo, the whole German
