Himmler in his talks with me seemed a very
vivacious personality, inclined to sentimentality
where his relations with the Führer were
concerned, and with a great capacity for enthusiasm.
It was a most extraordinary experience to hear this
man, who had sent millions of human beings to
their death by the most monstrous methods, speak
with enthusiasm of the chivalrous manner in
which the English and the Germans had waged
war in France in the summer of 1944, on occasion
interrupting actions in order that each might
gather up their wounded.

A Norwegian who had worked among
Norwegian prisoners of war in Germany had told me
that Himmler took a deep interest in Scandinavian
runic inscriptions, and at the end of our talk I
presented him with a Swedish seventeenth-century
work on this subject. Himmler seemed noticeably
affected; he told me that he was deeply touched
and grateful that I should have thought of giving
him this pleasure as conditions stood. He had at
one time used his influence on behalf of Professor
