for internment in Sweden, to which Himmler
reacted so violently. In addition to what I have
already reported he said that, whether or no,
Sweden and the Allies would have to give some
compensation for such a concession—e.g., an
assurance that sabotage would cease in Norway.

The shadow of Hitler fell across the room at
that moment. After the agreement with Musy,
Hitler had at once asked what concession
Germany had obtained. If Himmler came to terms
with me, he would have the same question hurled
at him again. It was evident that Himmler’s hands
were tied; that he was not so powerful as many
believed. The Führer was alive, and, for one
reason or another, he could not be ignored.

I told Himmler that the concession he had
mentioned was quite unthinkable.

I had met with an uncompromising refusal, but
the bargaining was not over. I changed the topic
by saying that the Swedish Red Cross was very
anxious for permission to work in the
concentration camps, especially in those where Norwegians
and Danes were interned.
